Food and Consumer Safety Action Plan

Your family's safety. Our government's priority!

The Government of Canada takes the safety of Canadians seriously; that's why we are proposing to update our regulatory processes to address the new realities of the global economy.

The proposed Food and Consumer Safety Action Plan will improve upon Canada's existing processes by:

  • preventing problems in the first place;
  • targeting the products that present the highest risks; and
  • providing rapid response to problems when they occur.

On Tuesday, April 8 the Government tabled amendments to the Food and Drugs Act, as well as introduced the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act to the legislature.

Putting the Plan into Action

 Only a small percentage of businesses behave irresponsibly. We will target these businesses aggressively which will enable law-abiding Canadian businesses to compete on a more level playing field.

Our Action Plan proposes:

  • increasing penalties to punish offending companies with stiffer fines;
  • establishing Product Traceability requirements, making it mandatory for suppliers to provide quick tracking of recalled products; and
  • new authorities to better enable Canada's food inspectors to appropriately monitor food and take action when needed.

Keep up-to-date!
